‘Selfie with Pookkalam’ Contest for Rassam – A Case Study

Ever since it was announced as Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year in 2013, “selfie” has taken social media world by storm. Zhooyi took advantage of this popular trend and created a selfie contest for one of our clients, Rassam, a vegan eatery with off-beat flavours that pack the right punch.

Onam was around the corner and celebrations were in full swing with Pookkalams everywhere. So, in the last week of August, we launched our unique ‘Pookkalam Selfie’ contest and gave Rassam’s Facebook fans a chance to show off their Pookkalams.  To participate in the contest, we asked fans to send their selfies or photos taken against the backdrop of a “Pookkalam”. A landing page was setup where fans could upload the photos. We received a lot of entries from Malayalees everywhere, blowing our expectations out of the water! Then, we sifted through the photos, selecting the best ones among the lot. At last, 10 photos were chosen and uploaded on Rassam’s Facebook page for voting. We asked fans to ‘like’ and pick a winner. The photo with maximum likes would be selected as the winner. Prizes worth Rs. 2000/- were up for grabs!

Voting went on for 10 days and in the end, Jino James from Alappuzha was crowned the winner, gathering 55 likes to his Pookkalam Selfie. Congratulations Jino!
“Pookkalam Selfie” contest received an overwhelming response from Facebook users and we want to thank everyone!

Needless to say, the contest was a sweeping success and Rassam’s page reach skyrocketed to a whooping 28,028, which was nearly five times the average reach before the contest. For Zhooyi, this was a rewarding experience and an opportunity like no other to engage with Rassam’s Facebook community, increasing visibility of their brand, gaining followers and influencers by leveraging user-generated content.
